Your Chakra System: Portals For Energy Flow

You have probably seen a chakra before...maybe on a t-shirt, or as part of a piece of jewelry or art. Their visual representation is everywhere these days it seems, but I would guess that very few people could actually tell you what they do and why they are so important to our health and energetic systems. They are often depicted as spinning wheels, with one or more colors of the rainbow signifying particular chakras. Maybe something like this?

This photo shows 6 chakras; depending on the energetic philosophy of your practitioner or the energy modality you are receiving, you may hear that you have 6, 7, 8, 12 or many more chakras in your body and energetic system. For the sake of simplicity, I'll talk about the 7 that are foundational to Polarity Therapy, one of the modalities I use to help people in their physical and emotional healing journeys.
So what are chakras anyway? In simple terms, they are concentrated portals positioned starting at the crown of your head and moving down along your midline through which energy flows in and out of your body and energetic system. They are located near certain parts of the body and represent energetically and symbolically, the physical structures in that part of the body. For example, the second chakra in the 7-chakra system I work with is located right around your pubic bone, and energetically affects and represents all of your reproductive organs, pelvic structure (muscles, bones and tissues surrounding it), and bladder. It's element is water (more on the elements in Polarity in another post), and it represents our emotions and feelings. It is the seat of our inner infant. The locations of your other chakras are as follows: your first chakra (root) is located between your legs, your third (solar plexus) is located at about your navel, your fourth (heart) around your heart, your fifth (throat) at your throat/neck, your sixth (third eye) in the middle of your forehead, and your seventh (crown), right above your head.
How do I work with chakras? In a session with me I will assess your seven chakras for their overall health- are they blocked, not spinning, droopy, or have dirty screens? (yes, chakras have screens). Perhaps they are wide, strong, with good inflow and outflow front and back? (and yes, chakras have a front and back). If someone came to me struggling with reproductive issues of any kind, depression, sadness, or low back pain for example, I would note to pay special attention to the second chakra and its associated anatomy. Regardless of their status, every session involves a chakra clearing and balancing. This is one part of the session where I am working with your energetic anatomy. Chakras can become easily out of balance, as can muscles, and as can our emotions and thoughts. Chakra balancing is just as vital as the clearing and balancing of your structure and emotions. They all work synergistically together, and the goal with all balancing work is to promote the easy flow of energy throughout all of your body systems. So, you can think of your chakras as simply another body system, like your digestive system, cardiac system, or nervous system. There is so much more to say about chakras that I will cover in a future post (or two, or three!). Until then, maybe when you see a visual representation of the chakras, you will think a bit differently about them.
